What is an acquired brain injury?
According to Government reports there are 1.4 million people living with an acquired brain injury in the U.K. and over 356,000 people get admitted to hospital every year with a new brain injury.
An acquired brain injury (ABI) describes any injury to the brain that happens at, or after, birth. It does not include genetic or congenital disorders that injure the brain before birth.
Acquired brain injury is an umbrella term that describes a brain injury from either a traumatic brain injury – such as a car or bike accident, or a non-traumatic brain injury – such as a stroke or brain tumour. Causes of ABI can also include injuries from a disease or infection, oxygen deprivation, meningitis, or drug/alcohol abuse.
Side effects of acquired brain injuries
Because the brain is the central part of the nervous system which controls and coordinates many functions in the body, brain injuries can have a wide range of debilitating effects. Brain injuries can be temporary or permanent and the long-term effects vary from person to person and are often impossible to predict.
Side effects of an ABI can include:
- Physical effects – such as fatigue and motor disorders
- Behavioural changes – such as changes to personality and self-control issues
- Psychological effects – such as depression, cognitive challenges, and memory loss
For many people living with an ABI their daily life is affected in many ways, making routine tasks and independent living a real challenge. That’s why acquired brain injury care at home can significantly improve one’s standard of living and quality of life, and maintain independent living at home.
