How does 24-hour home care work?
At Trinity Homecare, we provide an individual approach to 24-hour care by developing a personal care plan for each of our clients. This means we provide the exact support you need, taking into account your preferences and wishes. We work collaboratively with you, your family, and other medical professionals, so you receive the best support from experienced and compassionate carers hand-picked to suit your situation.
There are different ways that 24-hour care may be implemented in the home, depending on a person’s needs. It may require one live-in carer who is on hand at night if needed. Or it could involve two carers; one working during the day and one working at night to ensure round-the-clock support. This type of 24-hour care is suitable for people with more complex conditions or those that need settling during the night or have a tendency to wander.
The difference between 24-hour care and live-in care
Both live-in care and 24-hour care require a professional carer to live with you in your home. This gives you and your loved ones peace of mind that someone is always on hand to help, no matter what time of day or night. However, there are some important differences between the two:
Live-in care
With a live-in care arrangement, a carer works during the day and is available to be woken up for ad-hoc care needs during the night. Live-in care is suitable for people who may only occasionally need nighttime support. This means that the carer should not be expected to be woken up several times a night on a regular basis. If that is the case, then 24-hour care is a more suitable arrangement.
24-hour care
24-hour care describes care given in the home around the clock, day and night. This usually means that two or more caregivers rotate shifts to ensure someone is always awake and available to help at any time. This arrangement is best suited for people with complex health needs, such as dementia, Parkinson’s or palliative care.
What do 24-hour carers do?
24-hour home care consists of any activity that you need support with to live safely and comfortably at home.
Our carers can support you with:
- Personal care – such as bathing, dressing, and continence support
- Managing medication – help to administer medication and health monitoring, such as checking blood pressure or insulin levels
- Household tasks – any reasonable help around the home from cleaning, tidying, and doing the laundry, to walking the dog
- Meal preparation – home-cooked meals to ensure nutritional needs are met daily
- Condition-led care – support with existing health conditions such as dementia, Parkinson’s, and cancer
- Mobility support – help to move around the home safely with hoists, wheelchairs and mobility aids
- Running errands – such as collecting prescriptions, paying bills, and doing grocery shopping
- Companionship – the friendship and reassurance offered by a 24-hour home carer cannot be underestimated in maintaining a person’s well-being
- Social activities – visits to the coffee shop or local shops, arranging and accompanying to appointments, or simply a trip to the park
The benefits of 24-hour care
24-hour care can be life-changing. Professional carers at Trinity Homecare provide more than just practical support, they offer companionship and reassurance, nurture emotional and physical well-being, and support independence.
Other advantages of 24-hour care include:
Often, the alternative to 24-hour care is moving into a residential care home. When given the choice, the vast majority of older people want to remain living in the comfort of their own homes. With 24-hour care, you or your loved one can avoid moving into residential care and the potential stress of selling a family home, separating from a spouse, or leaving pets behind.
Living at home rather than moving into a care home maintains your independence to live life as you choose. You keep your place in your local community among friends and neighbours. You have the freedom to choose what you eat and when you eat, with meals prepared for you if you desire. You will be able to maintain your life surrounded by memories and loved ones, in comfort and security.
Knowing there is someone with you, day and night, ready to help with anything you need, provides great reassurance for both you and your family. 24-hour care removes the anxiety and isolation of living alone. And with the support of a Trinity Homecare carer, you can rest assured that you are receiving the very best support from carers who are compassionate and expertly trained.
The quality of one-to-one personal care, companionship, and support is unrivalled by residential care homes. 24-hour care provides complete continuity of care by carers who know and respect you. With over 20 years of experience and multiple awards in home care excellence, you can be safe in the knowledge that you are receiving the highest standards of care.
At Trinity Homecare, we have been awarded ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). This puts us in the top 3% of home care providers in England, a recognition that we are very proud of, and is a reflection of our standards.
How much does 24-hour home care cost?
Each person’s care needs and situation is very different. At Trinity Homecare we deal with every client with respect and individuality, creating a personalised care plan based on their requirements and wishes. This makes it difficult to give an exact figure. However, you can expect prices start from around £1,400 per week.

“We cannot express our thanks enough for the constant care and support we have received from Trinity. We would have been lost without them. They have constantly gone above and beyond what is expected and deserve all the praise in the world. They have showed so much care and compassion and not only looked after my grandad, but have also supported our whole family.”

FAQs
24-hour care can be arranged through a private home care service, such as Trinity Homecare. After a thorough assessment of the client’s needs and wishes, a personalised care plan will be put in place. A professional carer will move into the home of your loved one and care for them around the clock. The carer will be able to help with all daily activities and provide companionship.
24-hour care is for anyone who needs support and assistance at home. People of all ages can use 24-hour care. It could be for a short time only, such as respite care or convalescence after a hospital stay, or it can be long-term for someone with complex needs who wants to stay in the comfort of their own home.
The type of care package you have in place will define the type of care you have available during the night. With a 24-hour care plan, there may be one or more carers. If one carer is responsible for care they will be on duty during the day and can be woken up during the night for ad-hod support. If there are 2 or more carers they will rotate shifts, ensuring that a carer is awake and on duty 24 hours a day.
Some progressive conditions, such as Alzheimer’s, dementia and later-stage cancers require constant supervision to ensure that the care recipient is safe and comfortable. Particularly with conditions that affect memory or the ability to sleep, a minimum of 2 carers working on rotating shifts are recommended.
