There are times in our lives when we all need a bit of extra support with our daily routines. Personal care supports people to carry out their daily hygiene and personal routines so they can live comfortably at home and feel their best every day.
What is personal care?
Personal care is a home care service that assists people with critical day-to-day activities that they are unable to perform on their own. As the name suggests, personal care includes tasks involving personal hygiene, such as showering and toileting, and helping to care for one’s appearance, such as dressing, shaving or other grooming needs.
Personal care is important because feeling well cared for, clean and well-groomed greatly impacts a person’s comfort, overall well-being and self-confidence. Furthermore, good hygiene is critical for health and helps to control and prevent illness, such as skin infections and bedsores.
What does personal care involve?
At Trinity Homecare, we have been providing dignified personal care services for over 25 years. Because personal care is such a private and sensitive matter, our caregivers are well-trained to provide care in an empathetic and respectful way to ensure privacy and dignity at all times.
We know that everyone’s needs and routines are different. Some may need assistance with bathing or showering, while others may need help dressing, eating or going to the toilet. Some people may require help for a short time while others need longer-term assistance. All of our care services are individually tailored to the needs and wishes of our clients, meaning you get exactly the care you want, delivered in a compassionate and thoughtful way.

Who is personal care for?
Personal care is for anyone needing help with daily personal routines, no matter what the reason. It can be difficult and physically challenging for family members to carry out some of the more intimate tasks of personal care. The person requiring care may feel embarrassed and frustrated that they cannot carry out these private tasks for themselves. It often makes sense for a trained carer who is used to these scenarios to step in and lend a helping hand.
Personal care can be provided in many forms. Maybe your loved one requires temporary care while they recover from illness or hospital stay, respite care to cover for an existing caregiver, or long-term care on a regular basis to ensure they look and feel their best every day.
Types of personal care
Personal care can be a stand-alone service or part of other home care services. At Trinity Homecare, we offer flexible and easily adaptable care, so as needs change so does our care. Personal care can take the form of visiting care for those requiring assistance for a short period of time regularly. The minimum duration of a visit is 30 minutes, depending on the level of assistance needed. This could be one visit per week to multiple visits per day.
For people who require more support, live-in care provides reassuring, round-the-clock care that guarantees a carer is on hand whenever needed. Live-in care is an effective solution for those who live alone and do not have a network of loved ones nearby, or for people with more complex health needs such as in the case of dementia care or palliative care.
Benefits of personal care at home
Personal care provides critical support in a dignified and respectful way to those requiring regular care to live well at home. The benefits are numerous and include:
The ability to stay at home
Most elderly people prefer to stay at home rather than move into a residential care facility. Especially if they can receive the companionship and support that home care provides. Having support with simple tasks is often enough to help an elderly person to live safely and comfortably at home for many years.
Lower cost
While there are costs involved with personal home care, it is often significantly less than the cost of assisted living or a care home. With home care, you get a personalised, tailored service, something that is usually not possible in a residential care home setting. Personal care offers adaptable personalised care so you only receive and pay for the care that you need.
Personalised service
Trained home carers can focus on their client’s precise needs and do not have to divide their time and efforts among several clients – such as in the case of residential care. Every situation is completely different and while some may require live-in care, others may only require an hour per day of visiting care. Home care provides person-centred care, tailored to the exact needs of the client.
Enhanced quality of life
Personal care enables older adults to enjoy a wonderful quality of life, thanks to their ability to remain living in a much-loved home and maintain their independence. Home care offers more than just practical support, the companionship and reassurance provided by home care is invaluable. Many of our clients tell us that their carer has become like one of the family – a trusted confidante with whom they can share life’s ups and downs with.
