What is the meaning of domiciliary care?
Terms such as live-in care or visiting care are commonplace terms for the additional support people need as they get older, but what is domiciliary care?
Domiciliary care is an industry term for a range of care options whereby a qualified carer provides support for a vulnerable adult at home. Support at home is fast becoming the popular alternative to going into a care home. Providing support at home can often help the person being supported keep their own level of independence for longer, encouraging a much better standard of life for longer.
Why use the term domiciliary care?
The term “domiciliary” comes from the Latin word “Domus”, meaning “home.” The term domiciliary care is an umbrella term used for a range of care services. Domiciliary care will be used by professionals such as social workers or medical professionals.
As a care provider, we prefer to use the terms live-in care or visiting care. These two services are very different and therefore allows a clear understanding between us and a care seeker about the care or service that is required. With live-in care, a carer will live in the client’s property providing round the clock care, and with visiting care, the carer will visit the client at their property at the times they are needed.
Any level of support and care is often created bespoke to the needs of the individual depending on what support the person requires. This can vary from an hour or two, while there are those who will need a caregiver with them around the clock.
Domiciliary care service, also referred to as “dom care”, will help the person to live independently at home while a qualified carer helps them with day-to-day living. This could also include services to support any number of health care issues including:
- Personal care
- Daily tasks
- Preparing meals
- Support to take medication on time
- Companionship
- Advice and information
- Support for appointments such as doctor visits
One reason domiciliary care is so important is that it allows the person to continue to live in their own home. This means that the person will not need to consider moving into a residential care facility. Domiciliary care can provide the right service to help them enjoy the benefits of a live-in or visiting care worker.
What are domiciliary services?
As mentioned earlier, domiciliary care or “dom care” is an umbrella term used to cover all home care services. As well as visiting care and live-in care, many more bespoke services fall under these two care options to match the person’s needs for support.
