Palliative care and end-of-life care are similar types of care and they’re often confused for one another, but there are some differences which will help you or your loved one understand which type of care would offer the right support.
Palliative care is a type of care which supports anyone living with a terminal illness or complex condition, and is available from first diagnosis through to end-of-life care. End-of-life care is a type of palliative care and is designed to provide a comfortable, dignified & respectful support as a person reaches the end of their life.
Palliative care
Palliative care supports a person who is living with a long-term or terminal condition and can be long-term (for months or years) or short-term (for days, weeks and months). Regardless of how long you or your loved one requires the support of palliative care, a palliative care package can include visiting care, or live-in care, or a combination of the two. Palliative care at Trinity Homecare is entirely bespoke to offer flexibility to accommodate for changing needs and wishes over time.
Palliative care may begin as a visiting care service for occasional support with daily routines or to accompany to appointments, and visits can increase in frequency and duration as needs and wishes change. Visiting palliative care can transition almost seamlessly into a live-in care service, where a care assistant will live in the home with the person in their care to provide one-to-one full-time care.
End-of-life care
End-of-life care can be a type of palliative care, where care assistants will help to provide a comfortable and dignified environment as the person in their care reaches the end of their life. End-of-life care should be holistic and provide support for psychological and spiritual needs as well as medical and physical needs. The home environment is comfortable and familiar, and helps to offer a sense of security that’s immensely valuable for a person receiving end-of-life care. Receiving end-of-life care at home means there’s no upheaval and no disruption for your or your loved ones.
Live-in care usually offers the most appropriate level of support for end-of-life care, but different packages may be more suitable for different circumstances. Having worked in end-of-life care for over 25 years, our team at Trinity Homecare work closely with medical professionals and organisations such as hospices to provide specialist and holistic care for everyone.
