World Poetry Day was declared by UNESCO in 1999 to show the diversity of language and culture through poetry. It has been said that poetry is a traditional, yet creative form of communication that unites people around the world. Poetry allows individuals to express their emotions, creative talents, whilst demonstrating diversity in culture and values.
At Trinity Homecare, we are proud to celebrate World Poetry Day and actively encourage our clients and care workers to immerse themselves in creative activities. Not only does creative writing stimulate the mind, but it is a healthy way of promoting positive wellbeing– especially during the pandemic.
World Poetry Day poem submissions at Trinity Homecare
Like many of our other creative activities, we encourage our staff and care workers to get involved. This year, both care workers and office staff have created thought evoking poems that reflect working in the care industry. Take a look at just a few of the poems that were submitted.
Written by Eliska, this beautiful poem talks of bird songs and the beauty of ageing.
Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Disorders are hip,
And so are you.
Orchids are white,
Ghost ones are rare,
Strength is wiry,
And so is your hair.
Magnolia grows,
With buds like eggs,
A sky is pale,
And so are your legs.
Sunflowers reach,
Up to the skies,
A mind is thoughtful,
And so are your eyes.
Foxgloves in hedges,
Surround the farms,
A life is long,
And so are your arms.
Daisies are pretty,
Daffies have style,
Power is illuminating,
And so is your smile.
Birdsong is beautiful,
Just like you.

Written by care worker, Rose, this poem beautifully discusses the becoming of a care worker- otherwise known as “a superhero.”
When I was young,
possibilities were among
all that was bright and right.
God given.
Like Superwoman I would fly
and right the wrongs.
I was driven.
Then came love, painful, passionate, drawn out.
Laughter, tears, what’s it about?
Decided, Myself, Children, Family.
Was I in my element happily?
Cried my soul, “you must extend.”
Mind said “ will you bend?”
Heart and Spirit said “to others you must extend.”
The love in your heart’s not yours alone,
if not now, then when?

When I close my eyes
And drift off to dreams
I can forget all the lies
All the worries and screams
In my own world of dreams
Where I can stop to think, to plan
Everything is so nice and esteem
There’s a place I call my own, my clan
When I close my eyes and go to sleep
I see those who love me, my own clan
And I have no reason to cry, no need to weep
Cos I know, to be there with them is in the plan
